Rutgers Clinic Invites Tenants and Advocates to “Protect HUD Housing” on April 23
Newark, NJ – April 20th – The Rutgers Housing Justice and Tenant Solidarity (HJTS) Clinic is inviting all tenants, tenant organizations, and tenant advocates to “Protect HUD Housing” from proposed U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) rules that will drastically impact subsidized housing policy nationwide their on Thursday, April 23rd, 2026, from 1–2 PM at Rutgers Law School, Center for Law and Justice, 123 Washington St, Newark, NJ, Room 408, in-person and via Zoom. All interested should register here: http://bit.ly/48baDZO.
Changes and dates for comments include:
- Eliminating the 30-day notice requirement for nonpayment evictions (comments due on April 27th, 2026);
- Requiring all families to “show their papers” to prove citizenship with a passport or real ID (comments due on April 21st, 2026); and
- Imposing 40-hour work requirements AND a two-year time limit on housing (comments due on May 1st, 2026).
Event attendees will learn about the substance and impact of the proposed rules, as well as how to draft and submit public comments on the 30-day notice rule before the deadline. According to longtime Aspen Riverpark resident and tenant advocate Glenda Navas, “All tenants must take action to prevent these cruel and dangerous changes. As housing, food, and gas prices go up, HUD should be housing tenants, not attacking them.” Sharod Caraway of Newark, NJ, feels that “HUD housing is critical for people across the country. Tenants and advocates must join together with organizations nationwide to oppose these proposals by all means.” To register visit: http://bit.ly/48baDZO.
